Here is the vocabulary size of the six HSK level: different levels of tests require varying degree of mastery of vocabulary. This not only refers to the size of vocabulary but also the types of words as well as the amount of usages of the words. 4.How to prepare for HSK V vocabulary test

Vocabulary is essential to the learning of Chinese and any other language because words are building blocks to the language. However, learning Chinese words can be hard because of its connections to Chinese characters must be established. Try to use aids of Chinese radicals (pianpang bushou) to help identify the large scope of meaning (e.g., characters of 艹 are related with plants, and those with月 is associated with meat). Also, memorizing vocabulary with the help of topics is useful too. Try to learn more words through reading articles regarding to different topics, and that is more efficient than reciting a vocabulary list only. Therefore, when you receive a list for HSK level V, please try to relate the word meaning with real sentences, such as search them up in your textbook or attempt making a sentence using them by yourself. Vocabulary is really learned only with extensive usage.
